Abstract

RESUMEN La ciudad de Madrid durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX sufrió una serie de transformaciones, urbanísticas, demográficas y económicas, debido a un proceso de “dignificación” de la capital que no puede ser entendido sin la generalización del fenómeno migratorio y como este afecta en los cambios en la capital. El estudio de la población inmigrante en Madrid pasa por comprender las razones de su expulsión del mundo rural, las circunstancias que los lleva a escoger su destino y sus condiciones de vida una vez toman la decisión de emigrar.

ABSTRACT The city of Madrid during the second half of the 19th century experienced a series of urban, demographic and economic transformations, due to a process of "dignification" of the capital that cannot be understood without the generalisation of the migratory phenomenon and how this affected the changes in the capital. The study of the immigrant population in Madrid involves understanding the reasons for their expulsion from the rural world, the circumstances that lead them to choose their destination and their living conditions once they make the decision to emigrate.
