La productividad de la tierra en la Corona de Castilla a mediados del siglo XVIII

Abstract

RESUMEN. El objetivo de este trabajo es cuantificar la productividad de la tierra en la Corona de Castilla a mediados del siglo XVIII. Para llevar adelante nuestro objetivo hemos recurrido a una fuente sobradamente conocida: las Respuestas Generales del Catastro de Ensenada elaboradas en todos los pueblos de la Corona de Castilla entre los años 1750 y 1756. Para el conjunto de las tierras sembradas en Castilla nuestros cálculos han dado como resultado los siguientes rendimientos: 4,9 para el trigo, 4,4 para el centeno, 9,4 para el maíz, 6,9 para la cebada y 3,1 qm/ha para la avena y que sólo representaban un 1/3 de los obtenidos por la agricultura inglesa en esos años. A escala regional, este indicador señala importantes diferencias entre el Norte más productivo y la meseta castellana y Andalucía con menores producciones por unidad de superficie.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this work is to quantify the productivity of the land for in the Crown of Castile by the middle of the XVIII century. To take our objective ahead we have appealed to a very well-known source: the Respuestas Generales of the Catastro of Ensenada elaborated in all the towns of the Crown of Castile between the years 1750 and 1756. For all lands sown in Castile our calculations have resulted in the following yields: 4.9 for wheat, 4.4 for rye, 9.4 for corn, 6.9 for barley and 3.1 qm/ha for oats and represented only 1/3 of those obtained by English agriculture in those years. Regionally, this indicator shows important differences between the North more productive and the castilian plateau and Andalucía with lower production per unit area.
