Abstract

Resumen: Las fuentes antiguas proporcionan abundante información a propósito de los acontecimientos que llevaron a Juan Crisóstomo a su deposición como obispo y a su exilio, a comienzos del siglo V. La bibliografía les ha dedicado también numerosos trabajos, pero se ha prestado escasa atención al documento 38 de la Collectio Avellana. Este estudio analiza los datos que aporta, de gran utilidad para reconstruir con mayor precisión los detalles en torno a la política desarrollada por las autoridades occidentales en defensa del obispo Juan de Constantinopla. También se constata la necesidad de ajustar la cronología de algunos documentos significativos. En un anexo final se incluye la traducción al castellano de la CA 38, la primera en una lengua moderna.

Abstract: The ancient sources provide abundant information about the events that led John Chrysostom to his deposition as bishop and his exile, at the beginning of the fifth century. The bibliography has also devoted numerous studies to them, but document 38 of Collectio Avellana has hardly been considered. This paper analyses the data that the text provides, useful to reconstruct more precisely the details about the policy developed by the Western authorities in defense of Bishop John of Constantinople. The need to adjust the chronology of some significant documents is also confirmed. In the end, the Spanish translation of CA 38, the first in a modern language, is included.
