Nuevos productos de tabaco: ¿qué son?, ¿para qué sirven?

Abstract

A lo largo de la historia el consumo del tabaco ha experimentado una imparable expansion. En ella las industrias tabaqueras, principales promotoras de la universalizacion de su consumo, han tenido un gran protagonismo. Sin embargo, debido a la gran toxicidad del producto y a los millones muertes derivadas de su consumo directo, la industria tabacalera ha sufrido en los ultimos anos una gran amenaza en muchos paises a causa de la legislacion restrictiva de su publicidad y consumo. Cuando ha sido imposible ocultar mas estas adversidades, esta industria ha ido desarrollando nuevos productos de tabaco con los objetivos de ser menos toxicos, adaptarse mejor a las necesidades de quienes los consumen y disminuir la percepcion de riesgo de estas personas. Estos son los relativamente nuevos sistemas electronicos de liberacion de nicotina (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems o ENDS en ingles) y los productos de tabaco calentado (Heated Tobacco Products o HTPs en ingles). A traves del calentamiento de un liquido que contiene nicotina y sabores, o bien del calentamiento del tabaco prensado, son capaces de crear un aerosol (un vapor) que puede ser inhalado. El objetivo de este trabajo es definir en que consisten y cual es la utilidad real de estos dispositivos, los cuales son promocionados a dia de hoy como productos de riesgo modificado a la vez que se ofrecen como un metodo eficaz para disminuir el dano ocasionado por el consumo de tabaco.

Throughout history, tobacco consumption has experienced an unstoppable expansion. Tobacco industries, the main promoters of the universalization of their consumption, have played a major role on it. However, due to the great toxicity of the product and the millions of deaths derived from its direct consumption, the tobacco industry has suffered in recent years a great threat in many countries due to the restrictive legislation on its advertising and consumption. Being unable to hide these adversities for a longer time, this industry has been developing new tobacco products trying to look for less toxicity, adaptation to public health requirements and user needs, and trying also to decrease risk perception in newer and older users. These novel Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs) act by heating a liquid that contains nicotine and flavors, or by heating pressed tobacco, they are able to create a stream of aerosol (of vapor) that will be inhaled by the smoker. The aim of this work is to define what these devices are and what is their real usefulness, which nowadays are promoted as risk-modified products while offering them as an effective method to reduce the damage caused by the tobacco use.
