La Industrialización de una ciudad portuaria: Santander (1820-1914)

Abstract

RESUMEN La ciudad de Santander siempre ha estado ligada a su puerto, estructurándose en torno a él la actividad comercial e industrial. Esta última comenzó a surgir débilmente en el marco de la Primera Revolución Industrial con numerosas iniciativas de esa recién nacida burguesía, de la cual siempre irá de la mano en su desarrollo. La situación privilegiada de la ciudad en un entorno donde abundan numerosas y diferentes materias primas, supuso una ventaja comparativa frente a otros lugares. Ligado a esto, su relación con el comercio ultramarino y la exportación de productos industriales, mejoró enormemente la situación de la industria. Muy relacionada, al principio, con la actividad comercial y, después, al iniciarse el siglo XX, con la demanda procedente del sector minero y del crecimiento urbano.

ABSTRACT The city of Santander has always been linked to its port, which helped develop the commercial and industrial activity. This industry began at the time of the First Industrial Revolution with numerous enterprises of the new emerging upper middle class to which it will always remain linked. The city’s privileged site, with abundant raw materials was a great advantage in relation to other places. It’s for this reason that it’s maritime commerce helped improve the export of industrial goods and the flourishing of the industry. Closely linked at first, to commercial activity and then, at the beginning of the 20th century, to demand from the mining sector and urban growth.
