Los nuevos comerciantes en el Lago Español: el origen del galeón de Manila y sus desafíos en el siglo XVI

Abstract

El descubrimiento del Océano Pacífico permitió a los castellanos completar su búsqueda de una ruta alternativa hacia Asia, bloqueada con el descubrimiento del continente americano. Pero los tratados firmados con Portugal limitaron su actividad hasta finales del siglo XVI, explorando esas nuevas aguas en una ardua competición legal y militar. A este ámbito se suma el de la planificación de una ruta segura entre Asia y América, afianzándola un beneficio económico sostenido por una nueva oligarquía de comerciantes novohispanos que se enfrentaba a la naturaleza de esas aguas, la legalidad de la metrópoli y los corsarios.

The discovery of the Pacific Ocean allowed the Castilians to complete their search for an alternative route to Asia, blocked with the discovery of the American continent. But the treaties signed with Portugal limited their activity until the end of the 16th century, exploring these new waters in arduous legal and military competition. To this area is added the planning of a safe route between Asia and America, guaranteeing it an economic benefit sustained by a new oligarchy of New Spanish merchants who were facing the nature of those waters, the legality of the metropolis and privateers.
