España en el París de las exposiciones universales. Arquitectura e identidad nacional (1867-1935)

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Paris converts its World Fairs (on 1855, 1867, 1878, on 1889, 1900) in the front window of the industrial progress, the commercial advances, the scientific discoveries and the artistic avant-gardes. The vanity of nations illuminated the new bourgeois and industrial society stemming from revolutions of the middle of the century. The exhibitions became propaganda instruments of new values. Their visit reveals an imaginary history and geography. The different pavilions of the Fair justify the colonial world, ranked into a hierarchy according to the prestige of every national representation. While participating in the distribution of the technical, scientific and artistic novelties, the national speeches asserted by contrastappropriate identity. The collection of the national stereotypes supplied a cultural show that tried hard not to transform Spain into a country-museum within industrial Europe, until detached house of the Republic introduces the avant-gardist architecture within the international Exhibition of 1937.

RESUMEN. París convirtió sus exposiciones universales (1855, 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900) en el escaparate del progreso industrial, los avances del comercio, los descubrimientos científicos y las vanguardias del arte. La vanidad de las naciones alumbró a la nueva sociedad burguesa e industrial surgida de las revoluciones de mediados de siglo. Las exposiciones se erigieron en instrumento de propaganda de los nuevos valores. Su visita revela una historia y una geografía imaginarias. Sus pabellones justificaban el mundo colonial, jerarquizado en función del prestigio de cada representación nacional. A la vez que se difundían las novedades técnicas, científicas o artísticas, se afianzaban los discursos nacionales, definiendo la identidad propia por contraste con la ajena. La colección de estereotipos nacionales proporcionaban un espectáculo cultural que procuraba no transformar a España en país museo en medio de la Europa industrial, hasta que el pabellón de la República lleve la arquitectura vanguardista a la exposición Internacional de París de 1937.
