Dinero viajero. Censos hipotecarios y emigración un binomio inseparable en la Cantabria del siglo XVIII

Abstract

RESUMEN: El Norte de la Península Ibérica, desde Galicia hasta Navarra, conformó un amplio epicentro desde el que decenas de miles de hombres y mujeres enfilaron sus vidas hacia otros territorios a lo largo del XVIII, especialmente hacia la Baja Andalucía y hacia las colonias ultramarinas. Se analiza sobre todo en este trabajo el caso de los emigrantes montañeses que se dirigieron desde Cantabria hacia la Bahía de Cádiz. Se completa el análisis con una componente económica al añadir a las tradicionales causas de endeudamiento campesino el factor migratorio.

ABSTRACT: The north of the Iberian Peninsula, from Galicia to Navarre, constituted a wide epicenter from which thousands of men and women headed for other territories, especially towards the Valley of the Guadalquivir up to the colonies oversea, during the last decades of the 17th century and during most of the 18th. This work will study in particular the case of the migrants that left the Cantabrian Mountains heading towards the Bay of Cadiz. The socioeconomic approach will be completed by an economic reading adding the migratory factor to the traditional causes of peasants' indebtedness.
