“En la clase de mi hijo, solo quedan tres españoles”. Migración magrebí, segregación residencial y centros gueto en Torrelavega (Cantabria)

Abstract

RESUMEN La diversidad cultural es una realidad presente en todas las sociedades de nuestro tiempo. La población procedente de la zona del Magreb es, desde hace años, la mayoritaria en España, así como en Cantabria y, más concretamente en Torrelavega. Esta investigación pretende, en primer lugar, describir los procesos migratorios de las familias magrebíes residentes en el mencionado municipio, en este caso, desde el punto de vista de las mujeres. En segundo término, la idea es explorar la existencia de procesos de segregación residencial y escolar en la zona. Finalmente, se pretende conocer las perspectivas de las familias sobre el sistema educativo y su proyección en el futuro. Para ello, se lleva a cabo un estudio de caso exploratorio con enfoque cualitativo en el barrio Nuestra Señora de África y en el CEIP Eduardo Galeano, con la participación de cuatro mujeres musulmanas, madres de familia. Con los resultados obtenidos, podemos afirmar que las familias magrebíes de la zona viven en áreas segregadas y, aunque el avance en cuanto a ideas y pensamientos es notorio, nuestras familias aún esperan mucho de la educación como medio para tratar la interculturalidad y romper así con algunas de las connotaciones negativas que se le asocia a la población migrante, y particularmente, a la originaria del Magreb.

ABSTRACT Cultural diversity is a reality which is present in all societies of our time. The population from the Maghreb area has been, for years, the majority in Spain, as well as in Cantabria and, more specifically, in Torrelavega. In the first place, this research aims to describe the migratory processes of the Maghrebi families which are residents in the mentioned municipality, in this case, from the point of view of the women. Secondly, the idea is to explore the existence of processes of residential and school segregation in the area. Finally, it is intended to know the perspectives of families on the educational system and its projection in the future. For this, an exploratory case study with a qualitative approach is carried out in the neighbourhood of Nuestra Señora de África and in CEIP Eduardo Galeano, with the participation of four Muslim women, which are mothers of families. With the results obtained, we can affirm that the Maghreb families of the area live in segregated areas and, although the advance in ideas and thoughts is notorious, our families still expect much more from education as a means to deal with interculturality and thus break with some of the negative connotations that are associated to the migrant population, and particularly, to the one from the Maghreb.
