El culto a Isis en la Italia centro-meridional: un estudio de los restos materiales hallados en el Lacio y Campania

Abstract

RESUMEN: Con la expansión del Imperio Romano por el Mediterráneo, muchas divinidades y los cultos asociados a ellas fueron adoptados e integrados en la tradición greco-romana. Es el caso de varios cultos mistéricos, entre los cuales se incluye el de Isis, una de las divinidades principales del panteón egipcio. Este trabajo pretende examinar el Misterio Isiaco de época romana, acotando el estudio a una de las áreas geográficas más importantes del Imperio, a saber: Roma y las regiones circundantes del Lacio y Campania. A través del análisis de los restos arqueológicos y epigráficos aparecidos en estas regiones y con el apoyo de las fuentes literarias, ofrecemos una nueva aportación al conocimiento de la naturaleza de la diosa Isis, así como de los rasgos característicos del culto isiaco y sus seguidores. Entre los temas abordados se encuentran los lugares de culto a Isis, la iconografía y competencias de la diosa, las festividades celebradas en su honor y el perfil de los sacerdotes y devotos de la divinidad egipcia. La intención final de este trabajo consiste en vislumbrar la evolución del culto isiaco en época romana, con objeto de sentar unas bases que permitan un estudio posterior acerca de la adopción de la figura y los Misterios de Isis por parte del cristianismo.

ABSTRACT: During the expansion of Roman Empire over the Mediterranean world many divinities and the cults associated to them were adopted and integrated into the Greco-Roman tradition. That was the case of several mystery cults, among which the cult of Isis one of the main divinities from the Egyptian pantheon is included. Our study is meant to examine the Isiac Mystery during the Roman period. With this aim, we will narrow the study down to one of the most important geographic areas in the Empire, i.e., Rome and the surrounding regions of Lazio and Campania. Through the analysis of the archaeological and epigraphic remains found in those regions and using literary sources as a support, we provide a new contribution to knowledge about Isis’ nature, as well as about the characteristic traits of Isiac worship and its followers. Among the addressed subjects, there lie the places of Isis cult, the goddess’ iconography and features, the feasts performed in her honour and the Isiac priests and devotees’ profile. The final intention of this work consists in getting a glimpse of the evolution of Isiac worship in the Roman era, in order to set the bases for a later study concerning the adoption of Isis figure and Mysteries by Christianity.
