Arte y sociedad: representaciones en el Siglo de Oro Español: la pintura de castas

Abstract

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo exponer las características que hacen de la pintura de castas un género único, ligado a un periodo y lugar concreto: la América novohispana del siglo XVIII. De manera esencial, se expondrá las características de la sociedad colonial de Nueva España, la cual está sumergida en una profunda estructura jerarquizada en función de la raza conocida como sistema de castas. Dentro de esta sociedad el papel de los criollos será fundamental para la comprensión de las pinturas, así como el contexto que las envuelve, el cual está marcado por la Ilustración y las reformas borbónicas.

ABSTRACT: This work has the objetive of expose the characteristics of casta painting, a singular genre of a specific time and place: the American New Spain in the eighteenth century. In fact, I will try to expose the colonial society of New Spain, that is immersed in a deep hieralchical structure based on the breed and called: Casta System. Inside this society, the role of creoles will be essential for the paintings’ comprehension, and the context of these, the Illustration and the Bourbon reforms, will influence too.
