La voz femenina silenciada: discurso y emociones en el “Libro de Margery Kempe” (ca. 1373- ca. 1440)

Abstract

RESUMEN Este Trabajo Fin de Máster analiza la obra escrita de una mujer de la Inglaterra de principios del siglo XV, Margery Kempe, gracias a su autobiografía. Nos hemos propuesto analizar la vida de esta mujer por medio de una nueva corriente historiográfica llamada History of Emotions. Este Trabajo trata la importancia de los sentimientos para conocer el mundo personal de una mujer que pudiera ser representativa de su colectivo. El Trabajo Fin de Máster se divide en tres grandes apartados. En primer lugar comenzamos explicando el estado de la cuestión, la fuente y la metodología de análisis. Tras esto, se realiza el estudio propiamente dicho en el que se analiza la lucha interna contra la avaricia y la lujuria, así como la crítica a los comportamientos que para esta autora, atentaban contra Dios. Sin embargo, hemos encontrado que Margery Kempe desafíó el rol de la “buena mujer cristiana” de la época al desprenderse de su familia y pertenencias, y partir vocacionalmente hacia diferentes lugares de culto como Roma, Jerusalén y Santiago de Compostela, lo que nos informa de dos sentimientos contradictorios y la complejidad del mundo interior de esta mujer. De esta manera, Margery expresará sus emociones a lo largo de su obra, es decir, cómo se siente ante los parámetros culturales de su época. En cierta manera, nos encontramos con un ejemplo de mujer de los grupos sociales medianos con capacidad económica que le permitió vivir, conforme a sus propias creencias religiosas, y dejar un legado escrito que la convirtió en una de las principales escritoras místicas medievales. Esta actitud, produjo también sentimientos encontrados en la sociedad de su época, en unos respeto y admiración, pero en otros incomprensión para la actividad de una mujer casada. En conclusión, por medio de este Trabajo Fin de Máster, queremos aportar un nuevo conocimiento al estado de la cuestión gracias al análisis de esta escritora mediante una profundización en sus sentimientos.

ABSTRACT This Master Thesis analyses the book written by Margery Kempe, it is an autobiographical book that depicts an English woman of the early 15th century. The main purpose has been to analyse the life of Kempe by means a new historiographical tendency, called History of emotions. This essay is about the importance of the emotions arisen from the exploration of the personal world of a woman that could be representative to her collective. The Master Thesis is divided into three major sections. Firstly, we will begin with the explanation of the state of the art, the sources and the analysis methodology. After that, the reflection of the internal conflict against the greediness and lust is analysed, besides the criticism of the behaviour that, according to Kempe, damaged what God stipulated. However, we have found out how Kempe defied the role of the “good Christian woman” at that time, as she left behind her family and belongings in order to explore a new world. Vocationally, she went to different places of pilgrimage such as Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago of Compostela, which will expose her contradictory feelings as well as the complexity of the inner world of this woman. Thus, Kempe will express her emotions thorough her book, especially how she felt about the cultural aspects of the epoch. To a certain extent, we find Kempe as a referent in those social groups, as she was able to live the life as she wished according to the religious belief, and to leave a written legacy which made of her one of the main female mystical writers in the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, her perception of life was very controversial; many people were against her vision of the world as a wife; where as others felt respect and admiration for her. In conclusion, the aim of this Master Thesis is to offer a new conception of the state of the art thanks to the emotional analysis provided by Kempe through introspection on her life.
