Curvas planas con propiedades físicas o geométricas especiales y útiles

Abstract

RESUMEN: Se van a estudiar varias curvas planas que han despertado el interés de ingenieros, físicos y matemáticos a lo largo de la historia, ya sean por sus propiedades físicas o geométricas, siendo útiles en aplicaciones prácticas. Las curvas que se van a estudiar son la cicloide, la catenaria, la tractriz y la clotoide o espiral de Cornú. Algunas de ellas están relacionadas entre sí, como la catenaria y la tractriz, que lo veremos más adelante. De cada curva se van a presentar parametrizaciones y se explicarán algunas de sus propiedades físicas y geométricas más importantes. Además, se mencionará parte de su historia y quienes estudiaron dichas curvas.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work is to study some curves that have aroused the interest of engineers, physicists and mathematicians along the history, either by its physical or geometric properties, being useful in practical applications. These curves are the cycloid, the catenary, the tractrix and the Cornu spiral or clothoid. We will show that some of them are related to each other, like the catenary and the tractrix. The parameterizations of each curve will be shown and some of its most important properties will be explained. In addition, we will briefly mention part of its history and those scientists who studied these curves.
