Los cuidados enfermeros, garantía de futuro

Abstract

RESUMEN: Históricamente la Enfermería se configuró en el mundo y en España como un elemento supeditado al papel del médico, pero el devenir democrático, la construcción del Estado del Bienestar y las grandes reformas emprendidas, sobremanera en el siglo XX, han dotado a la profesión de un cariz de preponderancia dentro del Sistema Nacional de Salud, que aún no se ha materializado en su totalidad por las reminiscencias hospitalocentristas y medicalizadas que la sanidad sigue sufriendo. Durante los últimos años de la centuria pasada y hasta nuestros días, el sistema sanitario español ha sufrido numerosos embates derivados de menores presupuestos, alteraciones de su carácter público y un parón del desarrollo enfermero. Pero son precisamente las políticas potenciadoras de la Enfermería y la Atención Primaria las que han demostrado empíricamente ser un elemento garante de la supervivencia del sistema mismo. Es su necesaria implantación y favorecimiento lo que nosotros mismos como gestores deberemos liderar.

ABSTRACT: Nursing was historically introduced in Spain and also in the world as a profession subordinate to the doctor’s role, but the democratic development, the construction of the Welfare State and the undertaking of major reforms, particularly throughout the XX century, have provided the profession with an authoritative look within the National Health System, which has not been completely achieved yet due to the reminiscences of diversified, specialized, tertiary care, and medicalization that our health service still suffers from. Over the last years of the previous century and to this day, the Spanish Health System has endured several attacks as a result of lower budgets, changes in its public nature and a halt in nursing development. But in fact, the policies which promote the development of nursing and primary care have empirically proved to be an asset guaranteeing the survival of the system itself. As main agents, we shall lead and boost its necessary implementation.
