La Short Story en el aula de Inglés: una herramienta lingüístico- cultural que permite el estudio de la evolución femenina a través de la literatura

Abstract

RESUMEN La estrecha relación entre lengua y cultura, se hace aún más evidente en el contexto de enseñanza y aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera. Es imposible adquirir conocimientos lingüísticos sin tener en cuenta el contexto socio- cultural de la comunidad que habla esa lengua, o al menos hacerlo de una manera eficaz. Su historia, sus costumbres, sus convenciones sociales, el arte o incluso los deportes, suponen un todo que define a los hablantes nativos extranjeros. Necesariamente, es ese universo el que se lleva al aula para orientar desde ahí, la práctica docente. Uno de los mayores exponentes culturales de una lengua reside en la literatura, y es precisamente la literatura como herramienta en el aula de Inglés lo que en este estudio se va a trabajar. Son tres las Short Story escogidas con este objetivo: Weekend, Chocolate y A Sorrowful Woman, a través de las cuales se trabajarán tres mini- temáticas diferentes pero interrelacionadas entre sí: los roles domésticos, el matrimonio y la maternidad, con el propósito de mantener a un alumnado despierto lingüística y culturalmente.

ABSTRACT The narrow relationship between language and culture becomes more evident in the teaching and learning context of foreign languages. It is impossible to acquire linguistic knowledge without paying attention to the socio- cultural context of the speaking community, at least in an effective way. Its history, its costumes, its social conventions, art or even sports, constitute a single universe which defines the native foreign speaker. Indeed, it is this ‘universe’ which must be present in the classroom, as the principal focus of the teaching practice. One of the most important cultural aspects of a language is its literature, and this will be present in the English classroom along this study. For this purpose, there are three selected short stories; Weekend, Chocolate and A Sorrowful Woman. Also, there are three interrelated themes that will be analysed through them: domestic roles, marriage and motherhood, aiming students to be linguistically and culturally aware.
