El debate sobre la santidad y el Concilio de Trento

Abstract

RESUMEN La idea de santidad católica y la veneración de los santos, que habían tomado una gran importancia al final del Medievo, fueron dos aspectos profundamente criticados tanto por el Humanismo como por los primeros reformadores protestantes en los albores de la Edad Moderna. En el Concilio de Trento (1545-1563) y los años inmediatamente posteriores, la Iglesia católica reformuló la santidad, redefiniendo y fijando el concepto, al tiempo que controlaba el complejo fenómeno de las devociones a través de nuevas instituciones.

ABSTRACT The idea of Catholic holiness and the veneration of saints, which have become very important at the end of Middle Ages, were two profoundly criticized topics by Humanism and the first Protestant reformers during the first decades of Early Modern period. In the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and over the following years, the Catholic Church reformulated holiness, redefining the concept, while controlling the complex phenomenom of Devotions through new institutions.
