La digitalización de la Estadística General delReino, 1817-1820: un proyecto en construcción

Abstract

RESUMEN: El desarrollo tecnológico y la rápida expansión de Internet en las últimas décadas han proporcionado a los historiadores nuevas herramientas de trabajo al tiempo que han abierto posibilidades casi inexploradas en el campo del acceso a fuentes documentales y bibliográficas. Internet está definiendo nuevas formas de investigar para los historiadores. Desde finales de los años noventa este proceso se ha acelerado extraordinariamente con el acceso en abierto a multitud de fondos bibliográficos y documentales, de recursos cartográficos y audiovisuales provenientes de infinidad de instituciones públicas y privadas. En este contexto es donde queremos encuadrar nuestro proyecto, en el convencimiento de que ésta es la mejor formar de dar a conocer, difundir y propiciar un mejor conocimiento de una fuente histórica como la Estadística General del Reino elaborada entre 1817 y 1820. Los documentos relacionados con esta estadística fueron olvidados, mal catalogados y quedaron dispersos por multitud de archivos de toda España. Este proyecto persigue rescatar esta fuente histórica poco conocida y ponerla al alcance de los historiadores mediante la digitalización de 900 documentos que suman más de 10.000 folios de los fondos localizados en más de 180 archivos y 18 bibliotecas de 40 provincias que serán accesibles a través de la página web la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Cantabria.

ABSTRACT: Recent technological developments and the quick expansion of the Internet over the past decades has provided historians with new working tools while opening virtually unexplored possibilities regarding access to documentary and bibliographical sources. The Internet is thus defining new ways of research for historians. This process has extraordinarily hastened from the late 90s with the open access to a multitude of bibliographical and documentary holdings, as well as cartographic and audiovisual resources belonging to a vast number of public and private institutions. It is in this context we want to frame our project, on the assumption that this is the best way to spread and promote a deeper understanding of a source such as the Estadística General del Reino (1817-1820). For decades, documents associated with this statistical record had been neglected and miscatalogued, and nowadays appear to be scattered throughout a number of archives all over the country. This project aims to rescue this unacknowledged historical source as much as bringing it within historian’s reach. In order to achieve this goal, 900 documents have been digitalized (comprising over 10.000 pages pertaining to already located holdings in more than 180 archives and libraries from 40 provinces) and will be accessible at the University of Cantabria Library webpage.
