La religión del Egipto Faraónico en las obras de los escritores grecorromanos: una aproximación al tema

Abstract

RESUMEN Egipto es conocido por todos por haber albergado una de las civilizaciones más antiguas del Mediterráneo, ya que podemos remontar hoy sus orígenes, al menos, hasta los dos últimos siglos del IV milenio a.C. Griegos y romanos se interesaron desde muy pronto por las maravillas de la civilización egipcia, a la que consideraban no sólo la cuna de la sabiduría, sino también, el origen de muchos de los rasgos que caracterizaron a su propia cultura. Producto de ese interés son los numerosos testimonios escritos que nos han llegado de la Antigüedad, donde autores grecorromanos recogieron las experiencias obtenidas en sus viajes a Egipto, así como sus impresiones acerca de lo que allí conocieron. En este trabajo, analizaremos las obras de algunos de ellos, con objeto de dilucidar qué elementos de la religiosidad egipcia les llamaron especialmente la atención y qué grado de relación guardan esos elementos con la religión griega.

ABSTRACT Egypt is known by all because of having been home to one of the most ancient Mediterranean civilisations, since its origins date back to, at least, the two last centuries of the IV millennium BC. Greeks and Romans were early interested in the wonderful Egyptian civilisation, considered not only the cradle of wisdom, but also the origin of many traits which characterised their own culture. A result of this interest is the amount of writings from the Antiquity that have survived, where Greco-Roman authors expressed the experiences obtained from their trips to Egypt, as well as their impressions about what they knew there. In this work, we will analyse the writings of some of them, in order to clarify which elements of the Egyptian religiousness caught their attention specially and the degree of connection between these elements and the Greek religion.
