Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán, VII Marqués del Carpio: mecenas y coleccionista del Barroco español

Abstract

RESUMEN: El coleccionismo de objetos preciados por diferentes culturas y en diversas épocas es un hecho contrastado. Sin embargo, históricamente, el coleccionismo de obras de arte como hoy se entiende comienza con las cámaras de maravillas formadas por príncipes y nobles durante el Renacimiento hasta evolucionar en gabinetes y galerías durante los dos siglos siguientes, todos ellos antecesores de los museos actuales. Aquí se hablará del coleccionismo de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII en España e Italia, centrando la atención de uno de los más ilustres coleccionistas del barroco español: Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán, VII marqués del Caspio y Heliche (1629-1687). Siguiendo su trayectoria profesional, como político al servicio de Felipe IV en Madrid y, después, de Carlos II en Roma y Nápoles, se darán las claves necesarias para entender su colección, así como su labor como mecenas del arte. La herencia de un importante linaje, el gusto e interés personales y las obligaciones como diplomático harán de su colección una de las más importantes para la Historia del Arte del país tanto cualitativa como cuantitativamente.

ABSTRACT: The valuable objects collecting by different cultures and divergent ages is a corroborated fact, even though, historically, the collecting of works of art as it is understood nowadays start with the cabinets of curiosities set up by princes and nobles during the Renaissance to develop into galleries for the next two centuries, all of them as antecessors of the actual museums. Here, they will talk about the collecting of the second half of the 17th century in Spain and Italy, focusing the attention in one of the most distinguished collectors of the Spanish baroque art: Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán, VII maquis of El Caspio y Heliche (1629-1687). Folllowing his professional career, as politician at the service of Felipe IV in Madrid and, then, of Carlos II in Rome and Naples, the necessary keys to understand his collection will be done, just as his work as art patron. The inheritance of an important lineage, the personal taste and interest and the responsibilities as diplomat will make one of the most important collections of the Spanish Art History as much qualitatively as quantitatively.
