Septimia Zenobia Sebaste: reina de Palmira

Abstract

RESUMEN A mediados del siglo III d.C. el reino de Palmira fue adquiriendo una importancia crucial para el Imperio Romano. Situada en torno a un oasis en el desierto de Siria, llamada Tadmor, Palmira fue un importante centro comercial y caravanero que alcanzó su mayor auge en época de Septimio Odenato (258-267 d.C.), quien sirvió a Roma frente a los persas y árabes. A la muerte de Odenato, su esposa Zenobia proclamó la independencia del reino e inició una ofensiva militar extendiéndose hasta Siria y Egipto. Finalmente, el emperador Aureliano terminó por vencer a la reina, que fue llevada a Roma como prisionera. La imagen de Zenobia ha inspirado a múltiples autores así como artistas a lo largo de la historia, contribuyendo a crear un mito de mujer poderosa. Aquí estudiamos el reinado y la figura de Zenobia, una de las míticas enemigas de Roma.

ABSTRACT In the middle of the 3rd century AD the kingdom of Palmyra adquired a crucial importance for the Roman Empire. Located around an oasis in the desert of Syria, called Tadmor, Palmyra was an important commercial and caravan center, reaching itspeak in the time of Septimius Odenathus (258-267 AD), who served Rome against the Persian and Arab troops. On the death of Odenathus, his wife Zenobia proclaimed the independence of the kingdom and began a military offensive extending to Syria and Egypt. Finally, the Emperor Aurelian ended up defeating the queen, who was taken to Rome as a prisoner. The image of Zenobia has inspired multiple authors as well as artists through history contributing to create the myth of a powerful woman. Here we study the reign and the figure of this queen, one of the mythical enemies of Rome.
