Delitos contra la propiedad en época tardoantigua : cuando el obispo tiene codicia por lo ajeno

Abstract

RESUMEN: Objetivo de nuestra contribución es analizar algunos casos de apropiaciones indebidas perpetradas por obispos u otros representantes de la Iglesia tardoantigua en la Pars Orientis del Imperio cristiano. Utilizando como fuentes prioritarias las Actas de los Concilios ecuménicos del siglo V, veremos cómo los obispos se hacen a menudo responsables de una variada tipología de delitos contra la propiedad que incluye robos y expoliaciones a veces efectuadas recurriendo a la violencia. Se trata de daños contra la propiedad, privada o eclesiástica, que responden a lógicas de poder experimentadas con éxito por las jerarquías laicas y que normalmente se orientan en beneficio de un clan familiar o de las clientelas urbanas utilizadas con éxito por los obispos tardoantiguos para obtener y mantener su poder.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper is to analyze some cases of misappropriations perpetrated by bishops and other agents of the Late Antique Church in the Pars Orientis of the Christian Empire. By using as main sources the Acts of the Ecumenical Councils of the fifth century, we will examine how bishops are often responsible for a wide variety of crimes against property, including theft and plundering, sometimes even using violence. These abuses against private or ecclesiastical property, corresponding to power?s logics previously successfully implemented by secular hierarchies, are normally aimed at the benefit of their extended families or of the urban clienteles generally used by the bishops both to achieve their power and keep it.
