La cultura inglesa en el aula a través de los países de la Commonwealth of Nations

Abstract

RESUMEN En la actualidad, la enseñanza de la cultura en el aula es crucial para conseguir que el alumno desarrolle una competencia comunicativa completa en la segunda lengua y una competencia intercultural. En el mundo globalizado en el que vivimos, con la lengua inglesa como la lengua por excelencia en materia de comunicación entre naciones, son cada vez más los ejemplos que incluyen países donde el inglés es segunda lengua o lengua oficial, y no sólo los tradicionalmente utilizados, para incluir el aspecto cultural en el aula. El presente trabajo pretende tratar la cultura inglesa a través de esta idea, tomando como base la organización de la Commonwealth of Nations, con el objetivo de dar una mayor visibilidad al mundo anglófono en su totalidad. Tras una fundamentación teórica, se plantea una propuesta didáctica para trabajar aspectos culturales de distintos países anglófonos. Los resultados, después de llevar a cabo una de las actividades, demuestran que esta perspectiva es una buena forma de enseñar la lengua inglesa y de desarrollar en el alumnado actitudes y habilidades interculturales necesarias para vivir en la sociedad multicultural actual.

ABSTRACT The teaching of culture in the classroom is nowadays crucial for students to develop an intercultural and complete communicative competence in the second language. In the globalized world where we live in today, with the English language as the language par excellence concerning communication among nations, it is more and more frequent to find examples aimed at incorporating the culture in the classroom which include countries where English is a second or official language, and not only those which have been traditionally used. This paper intends to deal with the English culture through this idea, taking as reference the Commonwealth of Nations organization, with the aim to draw attention to the Anglophone world in its entirety. After a theoretical revision, a didactic proposal is presented in order to deal with cultural aspects of different anglophone countries. The results, after putting into practice one of the activities, demonstrate that this perspective is a suitable way of teaching the English language and of developing in the alumni intercultural attitudes and abilities necessary for living in the current multicultural society
