La persecución del emperador Valeriano en su contexto (257-260 d.c.)

Abstract

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo estudia las persecuciones contra los cristianos durante el gobierno del emperador Valeriano (253-260 d.C.). Aunque el fenómeno de las persecuciones es uno de los temas más estudiados en la historiografía sobre la Antigüedad y el Cristianismo, el debate sobre los motivos que las provocaron, el alcance que tuvieron o los procedimientos que se siguieron en su desarrollo, permanece todavía abierto. Se analizan, por tanto, en este trabajo, las principales corrientes historiográficas que abordan el problema desde sus inicios, con las primeras medidas aprobadas por el emperador Nerón, tras el incendio de Roma en el año 64 d.C. (aunque no se puede hablar propiamente de una persecución en este episodio) hasta el final del gobierno de Valeriano. Para entender la complejidad del fenómeno y la multiplicidad de factores que lo condicionaron es necesario revisar y analizar las fuentes conservadas, tanto de autores cristianos como paganos. En este caso, el testimonio ofrecido por los mártires, especialmente en época de Valeriano, contribuye a enriquecer nuestra perspectiva sobre el desarrollo de la persecución.

ABSTRACT: This paper analyses the persecutions decreed against the Christians during the government of the emperor Valerian (253-260 AD). Although the persecutions are one of the most studied topics in historiography on Ancient Christianity, the debate about the reasons that caused them, the significance they had, or the procedures that were followed in their development remains open. Therefore, in this paper, it is analysed the main historiographical currents on the topic, since its inception, with the first measures approved by the Emperor Nero after the fire of Rome in 64 AD – although it cannot be properly called a persecution-, until the end of the Valerian's government. To understand the complexity of the phenomenon and the multiplicity of factors that conditioned it, it is necessary to constantly review the ancient documents, both pagan and Christian. In the present study, the testimony offered by the martyrs, especially in Valerian’s time, contributes to enriching our perspective on the development of persecutions.
