Desempleo y vacantes: Curva de Beveridge

Abstract

RESUMEN: En este documento se realiza un estudio empírico sobre la relación entre el desempleo y vacantes, denominado curva de Beveridge. En su versión teórica, este fenómeno establece una relación negativa entre ambas variables. Para realizar dicho análisis, se han extraído datos de España tanto a nivel nacional como regional, obteniendo una serie trimestral comprendida desde la entrada al nuevo milenio 2000 hasta el último trimestre del año 2016. Puesto que el mercado español se ha caracterizado por una elevada tasa de paro durante la última década, el análisis de la curva de Beveridge está en auge de muchos estudios para determinar entre otros el tipo de paro generado en el país, ya que puede que no sea solo un desempleo cíclico sino también tener cierto carácter estructural. El estudio consta de varias partes, en primer lugar se plantean los aspectos teóricos de la curva de Beveridge. Dentro de este marco teórico, se presenta una descripción tanto gráfica como matemática de la curva con el fin de definir sus características así como los shocks que provocan sus movimientos/desplazamientos. Todo ello facilita la comprensión sobre la gran utilidad de dicha curva dentro del análisis de las economías laborales. A continuación, una vez revisado el marco teórico sobre el que subyace la curva, el análisis empírico se circunscribe al caso español, obteniendo su forma gráfica tanto a nivel nacional como para las distintas Comunidades Autónomas. Posteriormente, se ilustra una versión econométrica del modelo que presenta la curva de Beveridge, con la que se evidencian los aspectos estudiados en términos numéricos, lo que permite la interpretación de los datos en el análisis de correlación entre las variables vacantes y desempleo. Además, se han incluido variables a la regresión con el fin de analizar su significancia dentro del modelo. Por último, se detallan las conclusiones y resultados de esta investigación.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents an empirical study on the relationship between unemployment and vacancies, called the Beveridge curve. In its theoretical version, this phenomenon establishes a negative relation between both variables. To carry out this analysis, data have been extracted from Spain at both the national and regional levels, obtaining a quarterly series from the beginning of the new millennium 2000 until the last quarter of 2016. Since the Spanish market has been characterized by a high rate of unemployment during the last decade, the Beveridge curve analysis is booming in many studies to determine, among other things, the type of unemployment generated in the country, since it may not be only cyclical unemployment but also have some structural character. The study consists of several parts, first raised the theoretical aspects of the Beveridge curve. Within this theoretical framework, a graphic and mathematical description of the curve is presented in order to define its characteristics as well as the shocks caused by its movements / movements. All this facilitates the understanding on the great utility of this curve within the analysis of labor economies. Then, after reviewing the theoretical framework on which the curve underlies, the empirical analysis is confined to the Spanish case, obtaining its graphic form both at national level and for the different Autonomous Communities. Later, an econometric version of the Beveridge curve model is illustrated, which shows the aspects studied in numerical terms, which allows the interpretation of the data in the correlation analysis between the vacancy variables and unemployment. In addition, regression variables have been included in order to analyze their significance within the model. Finally, the conclusions and results of this research are detailed.
