La ciudad de Torrelavega ha experimentado en los últimos tres siglos un crecimiento muy significativo, pasando de ser un pequeño concejo a ser una de las llamadas ciudades industriales. La industria ha sido capaz de transformar el entorno de Torrelavega y sus alrededores hasta convertir el área en lo que es actualmente. A lo largo del siglo XX la evolución de la industria ha pasado por varios periodos convulsos, que han hecho que en muchos casos la industria haya tenido que salir de la ciudad. En el caso de Torrelavega encontramos el ejemplo de industrias que han desaparecido, y otras han sufrido una deslocalización, en ambos casos el espacio productivo ha sido utilizado para diferentes funciones. La industria parece haber perdido fuerza en la ciudad, dando paso a un periodo de terciarización. Nos hallamos ante la necesidad de estudiar la evolución de la industria en Torrelavega, analizar su función en la articulación territorial de la ciudad, y mirar al futuro con el objetivo de averiguar qué papel juega la industria en él.
ABSTRACT The city of Torrelavega has experienced in the last three centuries a very significant growth, going from being a small council to being one of the so-called industrial cities. The industry has been able to transform the enviroment of Torrelavega and its surroundings to turn the area into what it is today. Throughout the twentieth century the evolution of the industry has gone through several convulsive periods, which have made in many cases the industry has had to leave the city. In the case of Torrelavega we find the example of industries that have disappeared, and others have suffered a delocalisation, in both cases the productive space has been used for different functions. The industry seems to have lost strength in the city, giving way to a period of tertiarization. We are faced with the need to study the evolution of industry in Torrelavega, analyze its role in the territorial articulation of the city, and look to the future with the aim of finding out what role the industry plays in it.
