Las terapias avanzadas (génica, celular somática, ingeniería tisular y productos combinados) han supuesto un cambio en la concepción del término “medicamento” ya que van a posibilitar el tratamiento de algunas patologías utilizando vectores génicos y células o tejidos modificados [1]. En las últimas décadas ha habido un incremento importante en el número de investigaciones con estos productos, siendo las áreas más estudiadas la oncología y la patología cardiovascular. Sin embargo, hasta ahora solo cinco productos han obtenido la autorización de comercialización en Europa, debido a la disparidad de legislaciones, a las dificultades logísticas y al poco conocimiento en esta área de investigación [2]. Con la aparición del marco legislativo europeo común en 2007 se ha facilitado la homogeneización de ensayos clínicos y el intercambio de información entre centros investigadores con el consiguiente acceso a los avances y a los problemas que puedan surgir con el uso de estos medicamentos. Se prevé que en los próximos años muchos de estos productos lleguen al mercado pudiendo mejorar la calidad de vida de muchos enfermos, pero pudiendo a la vez repercutir gravemente en la sostenibilidad de los sistemas nacionales de salud debido a que se trata de productos con altos costes de fabricación [3].
The advanced therapies (gene therapy, somatic cell therapy, tissue engineering and combined products) have involved a change in the design of the word “medicine” because they are going to allow to treat some pathologies through genetic vectors and modified cells or tissues [1]. In the last decades it has had an important increase in the number of investigations with this kind of products, the oncology and the cardiovascular diseases are the fields with more investigation with advanced therapies. However, until now only five advanced products has the market authorisation in Europe, this is because the differences in the regulation, the logistical challenges and because it is an unknown area of investigation [2]. The European common legislative framework of 2007 has homogenized the clinical trials and it has improved the exchange of information between the research centers, this changes will allow the acces to the improvements and to the problems we can produce with the use of the product. It is envisaged in the years to come, a lot of advanced therapies are going to arrive to the market, they will be able to improve the quality of life for patients but maybe they involve economic problems to the health care system [3].
