abstract = {ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to provide a broad overview of the different stages of the conquest of Mexico (1519-1521), from the landing of Cortes in Cozumel to the overthrow of Aztec rule. First a brief introduction of the figure of Cortes and his arrival in the New World will be envisaged, to the followed afterwards by a sketch of the different situations of the Conqueror on the mainland: the foundation of Veracruz, alliances with the Indians, the socalled “La Matanza del Templo Mayor”, and “La Noche Triste” or the fall of Tenochtitlan,
