abstract = {RESUMEN: Los sistemas costeros semi-encerrados (SECS) engloban lagunas costeras y aguas de transición, y son importantes sistemas ecológicos con un considerable valor socio-económico. Sin embargo, la geomorfología de los SECS los hace especialmente vulnerables a cambios tales como el aumento del nivel del mar. Además, las actividades humanas y el desarrollo agrícola e industrial afectan a la función de estos ecosistemas costeros.  Las fuertes presiones antropogénicas a las que están sometidos los SECS provocan eutrofización cultural, y  la pérdida de hábitats como las praderas marinas entre otras consecuencias. El comportamiento de estos sistemas es complejo y dificil de predecir, por lo que el estudio de los mismos mediante herramientas de modelado es una alternativa eficaz. Por ello, en esta Tesis se han desarrollado nuevas herramientas de modelado ecológico para evaluar y describir el comportamiento de SECS eutróficos e hipereutróficos. abstract = {ABSTRACT: Semi-enclosed coastal systems (SECS) include coastal lagoons and transitional waters and are not only important ecological systems, but also have considerable socio economic value. However, the geomorphology of SECS makes them particularly vulnerable to changes like sea-level rise. Additionally, human activities, agriculture and industrial development  affect the function of these vulnerable and valuable coastal ecosystems. The strong anthropogenic pressures of theses systems provoke cultural eutrophication and the loss of seagrass habitats. The behavior of these systems is complex and difficult to predict and interpret. Therefore, the use of modeling tools to study their behavior is an efficient alternative. In the present Thesis, novel ecological modelling tools for assessing and describing the behaviour of semi-enclosed eutrophic and hypertrophic coastal systems have been developed. Thus, the present study provides a deeper knowledge about the behaviour of semi-enclosed coastal systems such as the Albufera of Valencia, and West Falmouth Harbour},
