abstract = {Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado ha sido realizado con el fin de analizar la 
repercusión del creciente consumo sin prescripción médica de esteroides 
anabólicos. Este grupo farmacológico es popularmente empleado entre 
fisicoculturistas y usuarios de gimnasio convencionales con el fin de aumentar 
su masa muscular. El uso indebido de estas sustancias puede devenir, entre 
otros problemas para salud, en daño a nivel hepático. Se han descrito casos de 
hepatotoxicidad, colestasis e incluso desarrollo de tumores como el adenoma o 
el carcinoma hepatocelular.
En primer lugar, se introduce de forma detallada la anatomía e histología del 
hígado sano, así como las características principales de los esteroides 
anabólicos en cuanto a su mecanismo de acción, patrones de uso y regulación.
Nuestro objetivo es realizar una revisión del estado actual de los conocimientos 
respecto a los cambios histopatológicos hepáticos relacionados con el uso de
esteroides androgénicos. Para ello, se describe en primera instancia la 
histopatología hepática general resultante del consumo de fármacos, y se realiza 
hincapié en las lesiones específicas que han sido repercutidas al empleo de
estas sustancias.
Por último, se exponen las complicaciones y los retos que supone de cara al 
futuro el abordaje de este problema en su dimensión social, como son la 
dificultad para estimar la prevalencia de hepatotoxicidad, el complejo diagnóstico 
de certeza, la escasa notificación de reacciones adversas por parte de los 
usuarios y el solapamiento diagnóstico.},
abstract = {This Final Degree Project has been carried out with the aim of analysing the 
repercussions of the growing consumption of anabolic steroids without medical 
prescription. This pharmacological group is popularly used by bodybuilders and 
conventional gym users in order to increase their muscle mass. Misuse of these 
substances can lead, among other health problems, to liver damage. Cases of 
hepatotoxicity, cholestasis and even tumors such as hepatocellular adenoma or 
carcinoma have been reported.
First, the anatomy and histology of the healthy liver is introduced in detail, as well 
as the main characteristics of anabolic steroids in terms of their mechanism of 
action, patterns of use and regulation.
Our aim is to review the current state of knowledge regarding liver 
histopathological changes related to the use of anabolic steroids. To this end, we 
first describe the general liver histopathology resulting from drug use, with an 
emphasis on the specific lesions that have been implicated in the use of anabolic 
steroids.
Finally, the complications and challenges for the future in addressing this problem 
in its social dimension, such as the difficulty in estimating the prevalence of 
hepatotoxicity, the complex diagnosis of certainty, the underreporting of adverse 
reactions by users and the diagnostic overlap, are presented.},
