El nucleolo es un subcompartimento nuclear conocido principalmente por su función altamente 
especializada en la biogénesis ribosomal, pero a esta función clásica se le han añadido otras
gracias a la investigación y los avances tecnológicos de las últimas décadas. Este orgánulo 
multifuncional también se considera un reservorio de proteínas y regulador de su actividad ya 
que puede controlar su exportación; actúa como sensor de estrés celular a través de la vía NSP 
(del inglés nucleolar surveillance pathway); favorece la estabilidad genómica, actuando sobre
heterocromatina perinucleolar, y juega un rol importante en el envejecimiento celular a través 
de la regulación de la síntesis de la telomerasa. La alteración de alguna de estas funciones
nucleolares puede dar lugar a la aparición de patologías como son las ribosomopatías, el cáncer 
y trastornos neurodegenerativos como la enfermedad de Alzheimer, sobre la que se centrará la 
última parte de esta revisión dada su relevancia en términos de prevalencia y coste 
socioeconómico.},
abstract = {ABSTRACT :
The nucleolus is a nuclear subcompartment known mainly for its highly specialized role in the
ribosomal biogenesis. Nevertheless, the nucleolus is not restricted to this canonical function and 
other roles have been described thanks to the research and technological advances in recent 
decades. This multifunctional organelle works as protein reservoir that regulates its exportation
and hence controls the activity of those proteins; it is also known as a cellular stress sensor due 
to its response through the NSP pathway (nucleolar surveillance pathway); favors genomic 
stability through perinucleolar heterochromatin modulation and plays an important role in
cellular aging via telomerase synthesisregulation. The alteration of any of the nucleolar functions 
might cause the appearance of pathologies such as ribosomopathies, cancer and 
neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. Finally, last part of this revision is 
focused on the pathophysiology of the Alzheimer's disease for its relevance in terms of
prevalence and socioeconomic cost.},
