Existing global compilations are not geographically comprehensive and do not provide consistent metadata for all sites. Furthermore, the age models provided for these records are not harmonised and many are based on older calibrations of the radiocarbon ages. These issues limit the use of existing compilations for research into past fire regimes. Here, we present an expanded database of charcoal records, accompanied by new age models based on recalibration of radiocarbon ages using IntCal20 and Bayesian age-modelling software. We document the structure and contents of the database, the construction of the age models, and the quality control measures applied. We also record the expansion of geographical coverage relative to previous charcoal compilations and the expansion of metadata that can be used to inform analyses.}, publisher = {Copernicus}, publisher = {Earth System Science Data 2022,14(3) 1109-1124}, title = {The Reading Palaeofire Database: an expanded global resource to document changes in fire regimes from sedimentary charcoal records}, author = {Harrison, Sandy P. and Villegas-Diaz, Roberto and Cruz-Silva, Esmeralda and Gallagher, Daniel and Kesner, David and Lincoln, Paul and Shen, Yicheng and Sweeney, Luke and Colombaroli, Daniele and Ali, Adam and Barhoumi, Chéïma and Bergeron, Yves and Blyakharchuk, Tatiana and Bobek, Prërmysl and Bradshaw, Richard and Clear, Jennif L. and Czerwiski, Sambor and Daniau, Anne-Laure and Dodson, John and Edwards, Kevin J. and Edwards, Mary E. and Feurdean, Angelica and Foster, David and Gajewski, Konrad and Galka, Mariusz and Garneau, Michelle and Giesecke, Thomas and Gil Romera, Graciela and Girardin, Martin P. and Hoefer, Dana and Huang, Kangyou and Inoue, Jun and Jamrichová, Eva and Jasiunas, Nauris and Jiang, Wenying and Jiménez-Moreno, Gonzalo and Karpinska-Kolaczek, Monika and Kolaczek, Piotr and Kuosmanen, Niina and Lamentowicz, Mariusz and Lavoie, Martin and Li, Fang and Li, Jianyong and Lisitsyna, Olga and López-Sáez, Jose Antonio and Luelmo-Lautenschlaege, Reyes and Magnan, Gabriel and Katalin, Eniko and Magyari, katalin and Maksims, Alekss and Marcisz, Katarzyna and Marinova, Elena and Marlon, Jenn and Mensing, Scott and Miroslaw-Grabowska, Joanna and Oswald, Wyatt and Pérez Díaz, Sebastián and Pérez-Obiol, Ramón and Piilo, Sanna and Poska, Anneli and Qin, Xiaoguang and Remy, Cécile C. and Richard, Pierre J.
