abstract = {Debido al largo periodo de actividad radioactiva que tiene el combustible nuclear, es necesario
hacer una gestión de este durante un periodo muy largo de tiempo. En un primer momento,
cuando el combustible emite mayor radiación, y su temperatura es más alta; este se introduce
en piscinas instaladas en la propia central. Esto se debe a que el agua crea un excelente blindaje
contra la radiación.
Sin embargo, debido a la capacidad limitada de las piscinas, es necesario sacar el combustible
que ha pasado en ellas entre 5 y 15 años, para poder introducir en su lugar, el combustible recién
extraído del reactor, el cual tiene mayor actividad. Para ello, se utilizan contenedores de
almacenamiento en seco del combustible nuclear gastado, conocidos como contendores tipo
cánister. Otra causa que puede obligar el uso de contenedores de almacenamiento en seco es
el desmantelamiento de una central nuclear, puesto que es necesario transportar este
combustible a un almacén temporal centralizado (ATC), o a un almacén geológico profundo
(AGP).},
